Exploring the Knavesmire Wood

Knavesmire Wood

Our first weeks here in York have been dedicated to buying a house full of furniture and other basics online to keep up the semblance of a normal, healthy family life. I can proudly say that we no longer fear for our lives walking our makeshift passages through towering stacks of empty boxes and packaging materials.

The claustrophobic space we created for ourselves wasn’t helping the lockdown lifestyle we have been living here in England. But, the recycling was finally taken to the service centre, we found shoes that were living under stacks of deliveries seemingly forever and we set off for the Knavesmire Wood. Before then, I only dragged my tired and weary body out with the monkey based on my responsibility as a mother and waning concern for my own physical maintenance. If it weren’t for parental duties, I could have easily slept all day everyday for the last two weeks.

Those tired and repetitive outings changed this last weekend as the skies cleared revealing the happy bright blue and we couldn’t let the glorious sunshine go to waste.  It was time to intentionally get out as a family for something new and fun. The Knavesmire Wood was the best introduction to the green spaces to be found in and around York. It’s basically a mini forest, nearly 14 acres in size, just tucked away off the southside of the York Racecourse.

Snowdrops
The Snowdrops are out to remind us that spring is on its way.
Balancing act
It all really is a balancing act.

A happy discovery there were all the stick shelters. Some industrious visitors to the wood before us built many sturdy stick shelters to play in, creating this idyllic natural space for little ones to have adventures in. The whole outing did my head a world of good and we cannot wait to return again and again.

Stick shelter #5, yes please!

See if you can spot most of our little family racing around ahead in the scene. The Knavesmire Wood is dog-tested and kid-approved. Can’t wait to return.
