Around the Hood

I think I love our neighborhood. I have yet to see the area in its true bustling, virus-free form though. Maybe a American horror-style purge takes place on Tuesday nights, maybe I have watched far too much TV during this past year.  Either way, the verdict is out until things open up again.

But, the South Bank area of York ticks all most boxes for us. Doctor, vet and mini market a few blocks away? Check. A horse racecourse dating back thousands of years that the dogs can be unleashed upon for daily walks? Check. It’s all here and more.

This is actually a pretty awful photo tour, not many of the major points this area boasts are shown.  We are lucky to be surrounded by a few pubs, a butcher shop rumored to be excellent, a bakery, primary and secondary schools, a play park and of course, all the independent shops along Bishy Road.  You will find none of that pictured here, I often forget to get the camera out with my little five year old sidekick alongside me.  When she isn’t requesting zombie stories or singing songs about the digestive goings on of the human body, she is otherwise wedging her feet in railings to climb and jump off of anything and everything.

I don’t know why I was up so early that morning. But such a rewarding sight.
The green in the center of the York Racecourse. I can’t imagine the lively scene this spot will become once things open again, but I do hope we’re still allowed there for dog walks and to cut across to the mini-forest shown in the background.
This huge path has been a boon for those of us wanting to see other humans without the need to actually get within a twenty foot radius of each other. Oh Covid, go away!
Tight roads and pricy homes near the York Racecourse. I will know I have mastered the art of driving here when I can successfully park on one of these little streets.
This is luxury for a terraced home – a front door set back from the pavement. Smaller terraced homes are accessed through a door set right next to the pavement. I shudder to think of spilling out onto the pavement with unruly dogs, an energetic child with unruly hair and whatever faces us on the other side of the door.
Out onto the main thoroughfare, Bishopthorpe Road, or, Bishy Road as the locals call it.
Pricier terraced homes, with the walled and gated entryway providing sanctuary off the well-used pavement in a walkable city like York.
Another style of terrace homes, found towards the north end of the South Bank neighborhood.
Behold, the British post box.
I can confirm that there weren’t any Billy Elliot types dancing around the backs of these terraced homes.
The alleys are actually pretty neat here. Some of the roads have a little of this paving in place as well. Cars do cut through these little ways, but mostly we have encountered fellow dog walkers making use of the shortcuts through rows of terraced homes.

Fortunately, there is someone else in the world who finds paved alleyways interesting as well. Here are their findings on these interesting backways. Their original report on the paving here in York.
