Family Morning at Brimham Rocks

Posted on

At 5 and a 1/2 years old, the monkey is at the perfect age to be unleashed on 320 million year old rocks. I think Brimham Rocks is perfect for the little mountain goat in many people’s lives.  As I poorly tried to explain how water, wind and ice can sculpt rocks to Ava, it really sank in how special this spot is.  The rocks appear quickly after leaving the car park and then you can basically scramble on any old rock you like. The lack of barriers and set paths really invites visitors to dive into the experience.

I was happy to have only one child in my charge, any more than that and any younger than Ava would have sent my head into an anxious tailspin. I would not discourage others to try it out with smaller kids though, I’m just a nervous wreck around heights combined with the lack of safety rails and/or soft padding – should anyone take a tumble.

Families were perched on many of the rocks with full blown picnics set up, which we unfortunately didn’t think to do. It looked like great fun. There were plenty of rocks to explore even with the lunch / tea time frenzy going on midday.

Halfway through our visit, Ava shouted “I love it here and I’m never going to leave!” She really meant it too. It took great effort to get her back to the car after a couple hours of exploration. Fortunately, we treated ourselves to a National Trust membership, so it will be easy enough to get back soon.
